Traditional superconducting tunnel devices are based on relatively simple materials such as aluminium and tunnel barriers made of their natural oxide. The more recently developed magnetic tunnel junctions use a more advanced technique and higher quality epitaxially grown magnesium oxide (MgO). We have recently developed a technique to grow aluminium nitride barriers with very attractive properties from a microwave perspective. Since materials with oxides are prone to have defects with magnetic spins the use of materials which are based on nitrogen rather than oxygen will be studied.
