Abstract:

In the last decade, the so-called network approach to psychopathology has received considerable recognition and attention in clinical psychology, psychiatry, and epidemiology. This framework conceptualizes mental disorders like depression (and other psychological constructs such as personality or cognitive abilities) as emergent properties that arise out of interactions among constituent elements; in the case of depression, these elements can be symptoms such as sadness, insomnia, fatigue, and concentration problems. The framework encompasses both theoretical developments, such as formalized computational models, as well as statistical developments, such as network psychometrics: an emerging discipline related to structural equation modeling that allows the estimation of networks in psychological data. In this talk, I will provide a primer on network theory and network modeling in the realm of psychology, with an applied focus on mental disorders.
