Quantum Nanoscience (QN) guest seminar by prof.dr. Antonija Grubisic-Cabo (Groningen University) on "2D materials: time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy characterisation and in-situ exfoliation". She is an expert in Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES), particularly on 2D materials and has developed a method and system for in-situ exfoliation of 2D materials in an ARPES chamber, in ultra-high vacuum conditions to preserve the fresh surface and be able to characterize the electronic properties with extreme cleanliness.
 
Abstract: The physics of solids, including two-dimensional (2D) materials, is determined by their electronic band structure. The investigation of the electronic band structure is therefore of great importance for understanding, tailoring and discovering new states of matter. In the case of 2D materials, such as graphene and single layer transition metal dichalcogenides, control of the electronic structure can be achieved by altering their surroundings, as the electronic structure of 2D materials is highly sensitive to the surrounding environment. However, robust methods for the determination of the electronic structure are required to ascertain the effects of those alterations. In this talk, I will show how we can measure the electronic structure of 2D materials and how it changes as a function of the surroundings that the material is placed in. Finally, I will introduce a novel tool for the customisation of the environment of 2D materials, namely a method to produce 2D materials in-situ and under vacuum for immediate photoemission measurements with no possibility of contamination.
