Quantum motion of carbon nanotubes and graphene nanodrums

[30-01-2012]

We study nanomechanical resonators made from graphene and carbon nanotubes in order to explore quantum effects on their mechanical motion. Because these materials are so light, they exhibit mechanical resonances in the gigahertz regime. By cooling them to extremely low temperatures (~ mK range), they naturally fall into their quantum mechanical ground state. The aim of our work is to make such resonators using novel nano-fabrication, and to develop ultra-sensitive detection techniques to readout out their quantum motion.
