The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) recently issued Rubicon programme grants to 33 promising young scientists. Rubicon enables Dutch scientists who have only just obtained their doctorate to gain research experience abroad.
California, here I come
Dr Rami Barends is embarking on 24 months of research at the University of California in Santa Barbara (USA). Rami obtained a Rubicon grant with his research project Solving memory loss in superconducting quantum circuits. Superconducting qubits, the elements that make up the memories of quantum computers, forget information rapidly due to surface dispersion. Rami will deploy resonators to map this dispersion process and use the results to improve the qubits.
