Objectives
The aim of the course is to improve participants' ability to write papers, reports or a PhD dissertation in English. The focus will be on technical, scientific English, but the course will also be useful for people writing about non-technical subjects.
Course description
The course consists of ten two-hour sessions. As we look at various aspects of the writing process and at specific language problems, you will create a text (an academic article, a chapter of your dissertation or whatever is relevant for you) in a systematic manner. The following kinds of topics will be covered:
Attention will be paid to various aspects of writing, such as ordering information in the sentence, creating flow between sentences and using parallel structures, with the ultimate goal of clear, effective scientific communication.
Throughout the course, feedback will be given on the basis of your own writing, to help you to recognise and work on any specific language problems you may have. The sessions are highly interactive, and there is room to deal with specific issues raised by participants.
After the course, you have the opportunity of submitting your completed article to the instructor for evaluation and feedback.
As the course uses student material for review, it will only be useful when you already have some research results.
Registration and cost
To register for the course, please submit the registration form as soon as possible. The courses take a maximum of 12 participants and fill on a first-come first-served basis. You will then be asked to sit a level test to ensure that your English is good enough to follow the course and to benefit from it. You can only be admitted to the course if you pass this test, or have successfully completed English for Academic Purposes 3(wm1101).
Please contact the secretary for a level test.
The cost is 500 euro excluding the course book.
