On Saturday 9 February, 2019 we celebrate the UN-proclaimed International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2019 in Leiden. At this date, Leiden University, National expert organization on girls/women and science/technology VHTO and NOVA collaborate to organise a festive day for (female) scientists and (PhD, university and high school) students. Also graduates (as well as their daughters and grand-daughters) are cordially invited to attend the event.

Besides presentations by Ewine van Dishoeck and Robbert Dijkgraaf, the program consists of fun workshops, experiments and side activities. The event takes place between 10am and 3pm.

To break the gender gap at all levels of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and to increase the participation of girls and women across these domains, the United Nations have proclaimed 11 February of each year the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Furthermore, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) celebrates its 100th birthday in 2019. Therefore, the IAU aims to spotlight female astronomers at the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and also interest girls in astronomy. In the Netherlands, this is combined in the festivities on February 9 in Leiden.

Note: The official language on the Women & Girls in Science Day is Dutch. Some lectures and workshops can be followed in both Dutch and English.
