Writing a Dissertation, Delft

Objectives
This course aims to:
  • allow PhD-students to get a better grip on the process of writing a dissertation, resulting in an acceleration of the writing process;
  • provide insight into essential dissertation characteristics, resulting in a higher quality of the dissertation.

PROM-3 is not an English language course. For PhD students wishing to refine their writing skills in English, PROM-4 (Scientific writing in English) is recommended.

Detailed description

  • thesis requirements: fulfilling the regulations, your supervisor?s wishes and your own ambitions,
  • defining the concept of originality,
  • writing strategies and writing tips,
  • reducing your research question(s) to the essentials,
  • obtaining useful feedback,
  • checking the viability of your enterprise by writing a concise introduction,
  • creating an effective outline (table of contents) and outline description,
  • planning on the basis of your outline,
  • order and structure,
  • literature and references
  • writing convincing conclusions,
  • writing effective summaries and useful recommendations,
  • scientific style,
  • illustrations, layout,
  • writing serious and playful propositions,
  • writing for a non-expert audience.
Organisation/teaching method
The course is highly interactive. Good and bad examples from recent DUT dissertations are analysed. By exchanging experiences, participants create a kind of support group. Participants apply the course content to their own dissertation and discuss the results with the group. Standard course assignments can be supplanted by assignments adapted to individual needs. For all participants an individual feedback session with the teacher can be arranged, during or after the course. The language of instruction will be English, unless all participants are fluent in Dutch.

Testing
A course certificate will be presented provided that the course assignments have been satisfactorily completed.

Course material
A reader will be available at the start of the course.

Course fee
The course fee is 625 euro (reader included). A TU-purchsing order should be in our possession 14 days before the start of the course.
