PROGRAM

Monday 31 May; Delft, Peter Zoller 'Quantum Computing and Simulation: from Dream to Reality'

Date:

VvTP Kronig Lecture

Time: 16:00 – 17:00 h

Location: Lecture Room E (F005)

Peter Zoller on the subject of this lecture: “We give a tour from basic concepts to implementation of quantum computing and quantum simulation with quantum optical systems including cold atoms and molecules. Furthermore, we provide an outlook to possible future developments such as hybrid systems and interfaces involving solid state and atomic elements, and entanglement of levitated nano-scale objects.”

Peter Zoller studied physics at the University of Innsbruck, where he obtained his doctorate in February 1977. Since then he has, among others, been Guest Professor at the University of Paris, Lorentz-Professor at Leiden University and Chair Professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He has also been head of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Innsbruck. At present he is Research Director at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Peter Zoller’s field of specialization of is Theoretical Quantum Optics, Atomic Physics and Quantum Information. He received several awards for his achievements on this field. For example he received the Schrodinger Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1998), the Max Planck Medaille of the German Physical Society in 2005 and in 2006 he was awarded the Dirac Medal. He also received the 2010 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics.

Professor Zoller has been Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 2001 and a Foreign Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) since 2008.
