Course description:
This workshop is specially designed for Doctoral level candidates considering working in private industry. For many, working within academia longer-term isn’t attainable due to limited funding so they turn to private industry for securing employment. For others, private industry is their preferred option but they are daunted by the task of beginning a job search. This interactive workshop will help delegates explore their construct of working in private industry and to provide them with tools and techniques for managing their job search.
Learning objectives:
During this workshop students will:
Explore why we work, the definition of a career and key factors which shape a career in private industry
Explore personal constructs, pro’s and con’s and fears of working in private industry
Understand factors which have influenced their career choices to date and to define their decision making criteria for selecting your next job
Create their mind-map of potential roles in private industry
Determine their key competencies and develop their accomplishment stories using the STAR method
Learn how to stand out from the crowd in the marketplace by defining their target market, target list of companies in private industry and understanding relationship networking as being a key aspect of their job search strategy

Teaching method:
A variety of theory, individual and joint exercises will make this workshop very interactive and requires active preparation and participation of the PhD students. Each participant will have the opportunity to share their own examples with the group and the trainer.

About the Lecturer
Madeleen Stamm-Vuijk is a careers counsellor with the TU Delft Career Centre who helps students and PhDs prepare for the next step in their career through workshops and one-on-one counselling. In this workshop she is joined by an expert from industry with a strong track record in human resources who provides excellent examples of and insights into private industry.
