ABOUT CASIMIR

Albert Polman (AMOLF) joins Casimir Scientific Advisory Council

[24-10-2013]

As of October 2013, Albert Polman will replace Bart Noordam as member of the Casimir Scientific Advisory Council (SAC). Albert Polman currently is a scientific group leader in the FOM-Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics, a research laboratory of the Dutch Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Furthermore, he is associated with the University of Amsterdam as a professor of photovoltaics. Polman is one of the pioneers of the research field of nanophotonics: the control, understanding, and application of light at the nanoscale. Polman's research group specializes in fundamental studies at the interface between optical physics and materials science, and has regularly demonstrated transfer of knowledge to applied concepts.

The SAC provides Casimir with expert and independent advice on all matters that are of concern to the research school. Apart from prof. dr. Polman, the SAC consists of:

  • prof. M.R. Beasley (Professor of Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering and former Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Stanford University, Stanford, USA),
  • prof. J. Howard (Max Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology & Genetics and Professor of Biophysics, Dresden University of Technology),
  • prof. J.P. Kotthaus (Professor of Physics and former Director of the Center for Nanoscience, München, Germany),
  • prof. P.B. Littlewood (Professor of Physics and Associate Laboratory Director for Physical Sciences and Engineering at Argonne National Laboratory. He also holds an appointment as Professor of Physics in the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago), and
  • prof. Z.-Y. Weng (Professor of Theoretical Physics, Tsing-Hua University, Beijing, China).
