In the latest round, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research has awarded 86 experienced researchers a Vidi grant worth 800,000 euros. The grant enables the researchers to develop their own innovative line of research and to set up their own research group in the coming five years. Three PIs hired through the NanoFront Program have obtained a Vidi grant in the latest round. Below you will find a short summary of their awarded projects. Congratulations to Andrea, Anton, and Stefan!
A tuneable platform to study quantum materials - Andrea Caviglia (Delft/QN)
Two-dimensional quantum materials offer exciting prospects for novel, energy-efficient information processing once fundamental questions are answered. Physicists exploit a new method to stack atomically thin layers rotated with respect to each other, resulting in a tuneable platform to study important quantum phenomena on pico- to femtosecond time scales.
Artificial intelligence for nanodevice design - Anton Akhmerov (Delft/QN)
The researchers will develop automated algorithms to create optimally functioning and robust quantum electronic devices. In that development they will need to overcome the imprecision of the device creation, and the natural variation occurring at the microscopic scale.
The spark of life - Stefan Semrau (Leiden)
Without electrical signals in your body you could neither read these lines nor grab the cup of coffee on your desk. In this proposal we will study bioelectricity in another fundamental life process: embryonic development. Our research will pave the way for the application of bioelectricity in regenerative medicine.
