I will discuss the role of spin-orbit interactions in quantum
transport from the perspective of geometric interference effects
induced by spin precession. The spin-orbit coupling effects are often
subtle to include in the familiar approaches to semiclassical and
quantum transport problems. I will argue, however, that a range of
interesting and rather nontrivial spin-dependent phenomena can be
understood in close analogy with spinless transport in the presence of
magnetic field. The specific topics will include the boundary spin
Hall effect, spin transport through mesoscopic rings and disordered
medium, and exchange interactions in Wigner crystals.
