PROGRAM

Casimir Course - Electronics for Physicists 2015

Date:

Time:

six full days

Location:

Delft University of Technology, Delft (for room detail, see text below)

The course is a must-have for PhD students and postdocs interested in experimental physics. We will study electronics with a strong focus on practical applications. After reviewing the basics of passive and active components and their practical limitations, we will focus on circuit simulation, systematic troubleshooting and opamp circuits. Signals, noise and interference problems (and solutions!) will also be an important topic. We finish with an overview of microwaves and various measurement techniques, and a day on advanced use of electronic measurement equipment. Several case studies from the physics lab will be used throughout the course to make the theory come alive.

The course will be given in Delft over 6 full days (9 am - 5 pm). Additional reading and preparation in between the course days will take another 3 to 5 days.

Teachers: Dr. Val Zwiller and Raymond Schouten (both Delft University of Technology)

Audience: The course is mainly intended for PhD students and postdocs (experimentalists as well as theoreticians) of the Casimir Research School motivated master students are welcome.

Dates and venues: The courses will be given on four Mondays and two Wednesdays in November: November 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, and 30. The Monday morning sessions will take place in the Applied Sciences building, Lorentzweg 1 in Delft, room F 105. On the Wednesdays (November 11 and 18), the morning sessions will take place in the room C of the Aula. All afternoon sessions will be in the Applied Sciences building, room A 053.

Organization: 3 EC / 5 GSC credits will be awarded only to those participants who attend the complete course and perform the lab exercises in the afternoons.

Reading: Book: The Art of Electronics, Horrowitz and Hill, 2nd edition, Cambridge University Press, New York, 1989. Extra material is handed out during the course. Students should be in possession of the book when the course starts.
