Casimir Science Day: You Are Invited!

All Casimir students and staff are cordially invited to join the biennial Casimir Science Day Symposium!

The Science Day will take place at the Scheltemacomplex (Marktsteeg 1, Leiden) on Friday June 7th. At 11.50 AM, the symposium will be opened by Leiden University Vice-Rector Magnificus Simone Buitendijk.

The keynote lecture, entitled: 'Switching without Switches' will be given by H. Eugene Stanley. This topic seeks to relate finance crashes, including the flash crash, network collapse, phase flipping in physical systems near their first order transition lines.

After lunch, Doris Heinrich, Martin Depken and Sander Otte will present on their recently started research programs. Furthermore, Joost Frenken will speak about the results and prospects of the NIMIC project, Nano-Imaging under Industrial Conditions. Leo diCarlo will talk about the construction of the first working quantum computer.

During the Science Day symposium, there will be an award ceremony, presented by Sytske Casimir, granddaughter of H.B.G. Casimir, for four Casimir students who have made extraordinary achievements. After a smashing performance the Casimir Science Day will end with drinks at the bar of the Scheltemacomplex.
