The festive opening of NeCEN will take place on October 27th. We will offer a program that covers the whole afternoon. The program starts with an in-depth part about cryo-TEM and how to set up an open access research facility. The afternoon will be closed with more festive activities. The opening will provide plenty of networking opportunities. All activities will take place in the Gorlaeus building of Universiteit Leiden, Einsteinweg 55, 2333 CC Leiden. Registration is required, please register by sending an e-mail to necen@science.leidenuniv.nl .

Program:
12:30 Registration and lunch buffet

Coffee, tea and sandwiches are waiting for you in the entrance hall of the Gorlaeus building. Registration for the first part of the afternoon is required.

13:00 General welcome and guest lecture by Holger Stark

Jan Pieter Abrahams will give an introductory lecture about NeCEN and the program of the day. After this, Holger Stark of the University of Göttingen will explain all about the fascinating world of electron microscopy.

14:00 Carrousel of workshops on science, industry and politics

What does it take to start up a high quality research facility like NeCEN? We try to answer these questions during three workshops. All participants that have registered will attend all three workshops. After a full ride on the carrousel, participants have a good view on ‘the triple helix’ and how this collaboration led to realizing NeCEN.

  • Workshop science: Professor Peter Peters (NKI-AVL) and professor Bram Koster (LUMC) will provide insight into the scientific relevance of a high quality centre for cryo-TEM. During this workshop you will discuss the conditions for a top-end research facility from a scientist’s point of view.
  • Workshop industry:  Dominique Hubert (FEI Company) will explain the value of collaboration between science and industry. He will discuss both sides of the collaboration: the relation between microscope manufacturer and the centre and the relation of NeCEN to companies that will use its facilities.
  • Workshop government: Jeannette Ridder-Numan (Ministry of Education, Culture and Science) will explain the relation of NeCEN to governments. Local and national governments can contribute significantly to realizing a centre like NeCEN. Together you will discuss the important factors.

16:30 Official opening

Between 16:30 and 17:30, Liesbeth Spies, deputy economic affairs of province Zuid-Holland will officially open the centre.

17:30 Drinks and small buffet

The end of the afternoon provides plenty of networking opportunities while enjoying a drink and a snack.
