“Hybrid quantum computing with collective qubits”.
The collectively enhanced coupling of fields to large ensembles of atomic, molecular or spin degrees of freedom makes it attractive to abandon the usual paradigm of quantum computing with qubits stored in separate particles and define, instead, the qubits as collective ensemble modes of excitation. Orthogonal collective modes can thus be associated with different qubits in a register. We will present a variety of physical systems where such collective encoding is possible, and where suitable non-linear elements in a hybrid architecture suffices to provide one- and two-bit gates and thus full quantum computing.
