PhD positions in Delft, Conesa-Boj Lab: Moiré Physics from one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures

[02-08-2022]

Two PhD vacancies are available in the Conesa-Boj Lab in the Department of Quantum Nanoscience in Delft. These two positions are supported by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) through the Vidi project entitled: “Moire materials from one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures”.

The main goal of this project is to design, realize, and explore a new dimension in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. In particular, the PhD candidates will consider the design and implementation of novel fabrication strategies for the integration of van der Waals materials in one-dimensional (1D) heterostructures; their subsequent characterization with advanced transmission electron microscopy; and the interpretation of the results by means of theoretical calculations and machine learning. Topics to be covered in this project include emergent Moiré physics in 1D vdW heterostructures such as the Moiré excitons and low-energy electronic transitions. We will also assess the feasibility of 1D vdW heterostructures for single photon emitters.

Requirements: We welcome applications from outstanding candidates who have proved themselves within one or several of the following fields: nanofabrication, advanced transmission electron microscopy, electron-based spectroscopy, and machine learning applied to material science.

Previous experience with some of the following topics would be welcome in the applicants:

  • Experience with state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities for nanomaterial fabrication.
  • Material characterization based on transmission electron microscopy and related techniques, such as high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy.
  • Machine learning regression and classification techniques for data analysis in condensed matter and material science.

Applications: Please submit your motivation letter, CV, a summary of your Master thesis, a list with grades of the courses that you took during your studies, and names of two referees as one single PDF file and send it to s.conesaboj@tudelft.nl. Please also arrange for these two reference letters to be sent to the same address.

Conditions of employment: Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School.

Applications will remain open until the positions are filled.
