Why are plants not black, like photovoltaic solar cells? Biophysicists Marcell Marosvölgyi and Hans van Gorkom show that this is due to the production cost of the light-absorbing structures and conclude that the current absorption spectrum of the photosynthetic apparatus is probably the best.
