PROGRAM

Physics with Industry workshop

Date:

Location:

Lorentz Center@Oort, in Leiden

Together with the Lorentz Center, the Dutch Research Council is hosting the 11th Physics with Industry workshop this year. During this workshop, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers work together in teams to solve real business cases. Five days, 25 physicists, and loads of formulas and cool ideas. Join one of the teams, led by an experienced senior researcher, and take up the challenge of finding the best possible solution! The workshop will be held from 16 to 20 November 2020 at the Lorentz Center@Oort, in Leiden. Of course, the corona measures will be applied.

You will gain new insights into physics-related commercial problems while working on fun projects with other passionate physicists and expanding your network. You will also gain experience in a refreshing new format, working towards achieving a challenging goal together with your team. The teams consist of PhD students and postdocs from research institutes across the Netherlands. A company representative and a senior researcher will be assigned to each team to ensure progress and scientific quality.

Participation is free of charge. The only thing we expect in return is your active participation in the workshop. At the end of the week, you will receive a certificate equivalent to 48 hours of study. You may be able to exchange these hours for ECTS credits at your graduate school – please check if this is the case with your graduate school beforehand.

Company cases

This year's cases are from Rijk Zwaan, Sioux Technologies and Optics 11.

Registration

Registration is possible via https://www.lorentzcenter.nl/physics-with-industry-2020.html. Deadline for registration is 28 September, 2020.

Participation

  • When you sign up, you can indicate which cases you prefer to work on.
  • Every participant will be assigned to one of their preferred cases.
  • There will be five teams of about eight people each, including the company representative and senior researcher.
  • After you’ve been assigned to a team, you will be asked to send an email to physicswithindustry@nwo.nl to confirm your participation. If you’re a PhD student, you will have to provide written approval from your supervisor.
  • Once your registration has been finalized, you will receive all the relevant literature, along with any other documents you might need. This way, you will be well-prepared for the workshop.
  • Visit your case company and get to know the organization you will be working for on Thursday 12 or Friday 13 November.
  • Prior to the workshop, you will have to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). For more information on this, please refer to the Ground rules (attachment).
