In an industrial process, if you reduce the reaction temperature of a catalyst by just one degree, you can save millions in energy bills and greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The concept of the reactor-STM was devised in 1998 in Joost Frenken's Surface Physics group and is the basis of PhD graduate Kees Herbschleb's thesis.
