Academy Lecture by George Whitesides

Simplicity: the ultimate sophistication

While there is a general trend to develop new science and technology that is based on expensive and complicated technical infrastructure, the power of the use of simple, out-of-the-box approaches is often underestimated. The research fields of simple micro/nanofabrication and microfluidics have proven to be particularly successful in generating  totally new opportunities for experimentation and application.

In this Academy Symposium the main invited speaker, Professor George Whitesides will present a variety of simple micro/nano technologies with promising applications , and discuss the pro’s and con’s of such approaches. Two Royal Academy members, Professor Dick Broer and Professor Wilhelm Huck will present related topics on new polymer technologies and chemistry in droplet microfluidics.

  • Albert van den Berg, KNAW board member, Directeur MIRA Instituut, University of Twente, Chair
  • David Reinhoudt, Radboud University Nijmegen, Introduction and conclusions
  • George Whitesides, Harvard University, Simple does it: from SAMs to paper-based devices and  soft robotics
  • Dick Broer, University of Technology Eindhoven, Morphing dynamics in ordered polymer networks
  • Wilhelm Huck, Radboud University Nijmegen, Synthesis of out-of-equilibrium oscillating chemical reaction networks
