Recharge

Batteries are anticipated to play a key role in the transition towards a renewable energy future by enabling electrical transport and stationary daily storage of renewable energy. This requires batteries with better performances that are cheaper and safer. Intensive research and development has led to countless new materials and breakthroughs over the past decades, which however appear difficult to be translated in actual technology. Here battery research and development challenges and knowledge gaps are discussed by considering the key atomic to mesoscopic processes. Based on this, new research methodologies and material design strategies are proposed that aim to recharge battery research.
